Children's Visitors Pilot Project

Call for Volunteers

The Commissioner for Children is looking for volunteers 10 hours per month to visit children living in State care in the South as part of a 12 month Children's Visitors Pilot Project.

The Children's Visitors project aims to increase support and opportunities for children living in out of home care to speak with a person independent of child protection services, their family and their carers.

Visits to children will occur monthly for the term of the Pilot, ensuring a point of stability for children who may have had little continuity in their lives. Children's Visitors will work within an accountability framework and will be required to report to the Commissioner for Children after every visit.

The Pilot is desinged to provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of a visiting program of this type for children in out of home care in Tasmania. This evidence will then be used for the further development of a State-wide visiting scheme to improve the lives of children in State care.

Volunteers must have access to the Internet and a reliable car. Volunteers will be reimbursed for travel costs and other out of pocket expenses. Children's Visitors will receive comprehensive training in the role and national criminal history checks will be required of successful applicants.
